True Champagne can only come from the Champagne region of France which lies 90 miles northeast of Paris. Hundreds of years ago, serendipity and the climate played a hand in creating champagne, turning what the winemakers hoped would be a Burgundy-style wine into the festive sparkling wine we know so well. Champagne takes blending to a different level, combining not only grape varieties (the three main ones being Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier), but also in many cases, regions and vintages.
The two cities of Reims and Epernay are situated in the heart of the Champagne region and offer an incredibly rich touristic experience. Among numerous sights to visit, you will find the 13th century Cathedral of Reims where many French kings were crowned, the Lighthouse of Verzenay and its audiovisual discovery of Champagne and of course, the most famous Champagne "maisons" (houses) and their underground cellars.
