Exclusive "fly and wine" experience in Uruguay

Imagine a movie landscape. Imagine, in addition, a variety of award-winning wines from around the world. Even better: wines that no one has yet tried, varietals and blends that are still in the middle of their creative process. Author wines. With the indispensable advice of our friend and sommelier, twice national champion, we have made a selection of Uruguayan wineries so that you are the first to discover their most exclusive products.

On this trip we will take you to Alto de la Ballena, you will see the Carrasco International Airport, streams, and the city of Piriápolis with its hills and marina. We will continue to the Sierra de la Ballena, to appreciate the incredible constructions on its hillside, including Casa Pueblo, a reference of Uruguayan art.

Bodega Altos de la Ballena

When you arrive at Bodega Altos de la Ballena, its owners will tell you the stories behind each vine, guide you through the vineyards and invite you to taste their creations in the unique setting of Laguna del Sauce and Sierras de Maldonado.

In 1998, Paula Pivel and Alvaro Lorenzo decided to establish a small winery in the department of Maldonado, in the southeastern region of Uruguay. With no more experience than being consumers of good wines, they set out to find a place that combined viticultural aptitude, beautiful landscapes and a good location. The selection of the terroir, considering topography, soil and climate, was decisive to achieve an excellent quality of grapes, essential in the production of high-end wines. Several months of searching, with advice and studies, paid off. In 2000 they acquired almost twenty hectares in the Sierra de la Ballena, a few kilometers from the sea and Punta del Este, the main beach resort in South America.

The first planting of vines was made in the spring of 2001, continuing in the following years until reaching 8 hectares. The vineyards are composed of the varieties Merlot, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Viognier. The first harvest was made in 2005 and the first wines were presented to the market in 2007. At present, Alto de la Ballena wines are sold in specialized stores, gourmet spaces and in the best restaurants in Uruguay, mainly in Montevideo and Punta del Este. They are also present in markets like Mexico, Brazil and Sweden.
