The Left Bank of Bordeaux, or the Medoc and Graves, is the most iconic wine region of Bordeaux. The Graves is the oldest wine-producing region in Bordeaux, dating from the Middle Ages and the Medoc comparatively young, serious wine production here dating from the 17th century. It remains the most well known wine region thanks to the 1855 wine classification that established its reputation and remains in place to this day.

This is where most enthusiasts will want to start their Bordeaux wine tour, where you will find the world famous chateaux names of Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Latour, Haut Brion and Margaux. Here deep gravel, brought from the Pyrenees over millions of years by the action of the river, have created the perfect terroir for a narrow band of vineyards close to the banks of the Garonne River and Gironde estuary.

Margaux is the largest of the six villages appellation of the Medoc. The Garonne and Dordogne rivers come together near Margaux to create the Gironde Estuary, bringing a together a diversity of well-drained gravel and sandy soil. 21 of the 61 Classified Growths of 1855 are in Margaux - prestigious terroir indeed. At its very heart is Château Margaux, the first growth. Margaux offers wine enthusiasts a full range of wine, every level of the classification can be found here, but also Cru Bourgeois, Crus Artisanal and small independent family run vineyards.

Tradition has it that the Margaux appellation produces the most feminine wines of the Medoc, supple, elegant and fruity with great ageing potential. It is also know for a tradition of warm hospitality. So close to Bordeaux, a Margaux wine tour will allow you to discover its true diversity in wine style but also a range of architecture from grandiose to rustic, from high tech cellars to country style tasting rooms.  Visit the spectacular new Franco-Chinese cellars of Marquis d'Alesme, experience history at Château Siran, the oldest family owned Château in Margaux. Learn about food and wine matching with a cooking class at Château Kirwan, or stay over night in the beautiful guest rooms of Château du Tertre.
