DAY 1: Bordeaux
Enjoy a walking tour of the UNESCO-listed city of Bordeaux, which has undergone a major renovation program. The impressive 18th century architecture and ultra-modern infrastructures create a unique cityscape. Stop at an iconic wine boutique in the heart of the historic town for a comparative tasting of Bordeaux Grand Cru wines.
DAY 2: The iconic Medoc wine region
There are few things that wine lovers enjoy more than driving along the Route des Châteaux north of Bordeaux -along both sides, row upon row of vineyards as far as the eye can see. The names on the road signs tick off a fabulous list: Latour, Lafitte and Mouton Rothschild, Palmer, Pichon Longueville, Cos d’Estournel.
Discover the different appellations -each one close to the other, yet so different- with visits and tasting at Grand Cru properties.
Enjoy lunch at a local winemakers’ hangout where each producer has his own rack for his wine.
DAY 3: Saint Émilion village and wines
Cross the Garonne River to arrive to the enchanting medieval village of Saint-Émilion, classified by UNESCO. A luminous, ochre-colored jewel built of limestone and Roman roof tiles, perched on a plateau and completely surrounded by a sea of vineyards.
In the afternoon, head out to the vineyards where a mix of traditional châteaux and ultra-modern wineries await you. Learn all there is to know about the Merlot grape -characteristic of these wines.
DAY 4: Arcachon Bay
Head to the Atlantic coast and visit the protected natural Bay of Arcachon. Upon arrival, board a pinasse –a traditional wooden boat- to enjoy a tour of the bay, including a close-up view of the oyster farms. Discover the area ‘like a local’ with your skipper, and learn all there is to know about the bay’s traditions and treasures. Make a stop at Cap Ferret to taste oysters with a glass of white wine. Sit back, relax and take in the scenery!
DAY 5: Biarritz
Leave Bordeaux and head south towards Biarritz.
Explore the town of Biarritz - the ‘Queen of resorts and the resorts of Kings!’ Walk along the Grande Plage; stop in a cozy fishing port to see the Rocher de la Vierge (“The Rock of the Blessed Virgin”), which can only be reached by the imposing bridge built by Gustave Eiffel.
In the evening, enjoy dinner at La Tantina de Burgos, an iconic address where you will find the true identity of Basque Country in the paintings of local artists on the walls, the red and white checked table clothes and the walls of dried Espelette peppers.
DAY 6: Basque Country
Head inland to the Basque countryside: just minutes away from the bustle of the sophisticated Basque coast, lies the essence of the Basque country, its villages. A proud people with traditions dating back to the beginning of time.
Stop in the villages of Sare, Ainhoa and Espelette (world famous for the local red peppers) where you will be taken back to another place and time. Make a stop in the region of Irouléguy & stop at one of the local wineries such as Brana or Arretxea - these secret addresses will amaze you with their special wine production.
We will make a stop for lunch at a secret address, a charming inn hidden at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains. Enter the Fagoaga family's home and enjoy a gourmet lunch.
DAY 7: Pelote Basque demonstration and Biarritz Market
This morning, discover a local tradition -Pelote Basque- the world’s fastest ball game: the ball travels up to 300 km/h! This native Basque game is the perfect way to discover Basque culture and traditions.
After the demonstration, head over to the covered market of Biarritz to enjoy lunch at the Bar du Commerce, where the fresh produce for the dishes comes directly from the market.
Spend the afternoon at your own leisure: go shopping, to a spa or play a game of golf...
DAY 8: Departure
Departure from Biarritz airport or possibility to extend your trip to the Spanish Basque Country.
