The wine region of Graves begins at its northern edge at the « Jalle de Blanquefort » north of Bordeaux, and ends just beyond Langon, south of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Garonne River. Pronounce the word as in "gravel" which is where the region takes its name - from the unique soils which combine deep layers of gravel and stone. Dig a little beneath the gravel and you'll find clay and sand. Another important factor of the region's "terroir" is the micro-climate created by the splendid Landes pine forest which offers the vines protection from humidity and the winds.
The producers of the Graves area were not included in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, with the exception of Chateau Haut Brion, which was listed as a First Growth. They took matters into their own hands, creating the Graves Classification in 1953, to be finally officialized in 1959. This was long before the Pessac-Léognan appellation which was only created in 1987. The wines produced in the Graves and Pessac-Léognan appellations are mainly red but a smaller quantity of excellent white dry wines also originate here. The third appellation in the area is Graves Supérieures for medium-sweet white wines.
The famous red wines of Pessac-Léognan are fleshy and balanced with elegant tannins. They are generally bursting with ripe red fruit and exude notes of licorice. Concentrated and complex, the white wines are rich and unctuous with a beautiful freshness.
