Franschhoek is a traditional vineyard town famously known as the French Corner of the Cape and is considered to be the food and wine capital of South Africa.
Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyards
Mont Rochelle has 22 rooms including six suites all arranged around the main building. We have five different types of rooms including: four Shiraz Rooms with king-size beds all featuring courtyard or valley views. Our six Merlot Rooms are larger than our Shiraz Rooms and also boast king-size beds with valley views. The six Cabernet Rooms include a private terrace overlooking the valley. There are also four even more spacious Pinotage Suites, which each feature a separate lounge and fantastic views. Finally, guests staying in our two largest rooms, our Cap Classique Suites, will enjoy a separate lounge area, a private terrace and their own plunge pool. All rooms can be made up with twin beds on request.
What could be more relaxing than a spa treatment during your stay? Mont Rochelle has two dedicated spa treatment rooms as well as a Hammam. We use the eco-friendly Africology ‘Authentic’ range of products which are made from 100% essential oils and natural plant extracts.
Take a dip and relax in the main outdoor heated swimming pool at Mont Rochelle - there are some fantastic views of the Franschhoek Mountains. Bar service is available around the pool and fresh pool towels are available. Resident guests are welcome to make use of Hammam at their leisure as long as it’s not in use for a scheduled treatment.
We cultivate grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties amongst a few others. The vineyards are situated between 250m and 400m above sea level exposing the grapes to a range of micro climates. Mediterranean-like conditions found in the Western Cape means dry summers and high winter rainfalls of 1000mm. The Franschhoek Valley also experiences the south-easter which helps bring in cooler air allowing for a longer ripening period.
Our wine tasting isn't just a special event – it’s an everyday occurrence. We can organise wine tastings in a variety of locations, including in our restaurants, at our bar, or in our wine cellar (as you might expect!).
Our 150-year-old wine cellar was previously used as a fruit packing shed for the early settlers. Since being converted to a traditional wine cellar we can now process close to 110 tons of grapes in a season, these smaller volumes afford more concentration on quality rather than quantity. Stainless steel tanks aid in the making of the crisp clean whites, while barrels are favoured for the red wine making.
And when you’re not drinking wine... the grounds at Mont Rochelle cover 39 hectares (about 100 acres) and you’re welcome to go exploring. Enjoy a hike through hills, valleys and vineyards surrounding the hotel, as well as in local reserves. The Mont Rochelle Reserve on the opposite side of the valley offers superb views of the wine valley and on a clear day you can even see Table Mountain and the ocean! The walks vary in length from 3 to 8 hours and are of moderate intensity.
For the active types our gym is available between 06.00am and 10.00pm every day. There are two treadmills, bikes, an adjustable bench and suspension training pack and a set of free-weights.
We have a Astroturf floodlit tennis court and a cabana complete with a kitchen and bathroom. Rackets and balls supplied.
There are two restaurants at Mont Rochelle: a main restaurant for fantastic gourmet meals and a spot for a light lunch in the sunshine or a relaxed meal in the evening. Both restaurants aim to showcase the very best produce and seasonal ingredients from South Africa paired with some excellent wines.
