Activities

Dominio de Valdepusa

The Dominio de Valdepusa estate, part of the historical XIII century Señorío de Valdepusa near Toledo, has belonged to the Falco Fernández de Córdoba family since early medieval times (1292). It is there that Carlos Falcó, Marqués de Griñón, started a viticultural venture in 1974 and later in 2002 an olive oil revolution that positioned Marqués de Griñón as a leading ultrapremium Spanish wine and extra virgin olive oil brand in the leading world markets. The terroirs of the ancient Señorío de Valdepusa are ideal for the production of both wine and olive oil of great finesse and intense flavours. Our Marqués de Griñón wines and olive oils are consistently rated among the very best Spain and, often, the world.

First Spanish "Vino de Pago"

In 2002, Dominio de Valdepusa was recognised by the Spanish Government as the first official "Vino de Pago" (Estate Apellation) of Spain.

Valdepusa is located near Malpica de Tajo, province of Toledo, 109 km southwest from Madrid and 50 km from Toledo, the historical capital of Spain. Close to the main house and chapel, 50 hectares (125 acres) are currently planted with vines, including the original vineyard of Cabernet Sauvignon (1974), Syrah (1991), Petit Verdot (1992) both pioneers in Spain - and Graciano (2000), using Lyre, Smart Dyson and double guyot canopies.

Over the years, we have been advised by some of the best consultants in the world, such as renowned oenologist Michel Rolland, Dr. Richard Smart, the famous Australian viticulturist, or the burgundian agronomist Claude Bourguignon, inspiring us with his biodynamic approach. Our aim is to produce fine elegant wines that reflect our extraordinary terroirs preserved for over seven centuries by our ancestors.

The main house and the winery at Dominio de Valdepusa are historical 18th century buildings. The underground areas, renovated in 1989, are fitted with air conditionning systems, including both temperature and humidity controls, allowing barrel ageing and extensive bottle ageing in Nevers and Allier oak barrels of varied sizes and shapes. The old farmhouse used as reception area holds four dining and tasting rooms with a combined capacity for over 100 guests and the domains' administrative offices. The central patio, which, like the rest of the winery, shows classic architecture from Toledo, holds a lagar for treading grapes inaugurated in 1995 by the current King of Spain, D. Felipe de Borbón. At times, the lagar is used by visitors who want to experience such an ancient tradition.

Olive Oil

The olive groves include a 125 year-old "Cornicabra" (a local variety) surrounding the 1000 year-old templarian Villalba Castle and several modern (10 to 25 year old) "Picual" and "Arbequina", drip-irrigated gobelet-trained olive tree parcels totalling over 110 hectares (275 acres).

Two consecutive and state-of-the art revolutionary olive oil "frantoios" designed for "antioxidative" extraction by Italian scientist Marco mugelli in 2002 and 2013 resulted in a major breaktroughs in the 5000-6000 year-old history of extravirgin olive oil: a 12-fold increase in essential antioxidants such as polyphenols, vitamin E or squalene.

As a result, Flos olei, the leading international extravirgin olive oil guide yearly published in Rome by Italian expert marco Oreggia awarded Marqués de Griñón its highest rating (98/100 points) for the five last consecutive years (2013-2017). Must leading international tastings - Los Angeles, New York, Tel-Aviv or Tokyo have also recognised the extraordinary quality of MG extravirgin oils.
