Bike Tour through the Cognac Countryside

Located just along the Charente river is the historic town of Cognac. With many art museums and gothic architecture buildings adorning the old town squares of the city, Cognac is quite the cultural hub in the Aquitaine region of France.

With its mild climate, beautiful landscapes, Romanesque churches and local specialties, the Cognac countryside appeals to all visitors who love nature and outdoor life.

With its nearly 75,000 hectares, the Cognac region encompasses the largest white-grape vineyard in Europe. It is divided into six high-quality grape-growing crus (“zones”): Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Fins Bois, Bon Bois and Bois Ordinaire. Although the names of the first two might sound deceiving, these Cognac divisions should not be confused with the Champagne region and its sparkling wines, as they are not in the least related.

The thing that has made Cognac famous around the world, is the namesake spirit that is unique to this region. As the town of Cognac is situated just 100 kilometers away from one the most important wine-making regions of the world – Bordeaux, it couldn’t have shied away from the region’s traditional practice of growing and harvesting fine grapes. But unlike its Southern cousin, the region of Cognac converts their produce into an eau-de-vie through distillation, which is then carefully crafted to create one of the most sought-after brandies in the world.

Be it for families or experimented cyclists, the region offers a multitude of bike itineraries around Cognac, Jarnac, Segonzac or Chateauneuf.
