San Felice tells the story about quality, research, wellness and Tuscan wine.
Well placed into the Chianti’s green and golden hills, the history of Pieve San Felice, begins in the Etruscan era, goes through the Papacy and sees several fights over the municipalities of Florence and Siena. Grisaldi Del Taja was the last noble family to detain the property, but it was only in the 1970s - with the acquisition by Allianz Group - that the process toward quality started: the hamlet was completely restored and also all the vineyards were completely replanted -the goal was bringing the Sangiovese to its best. This project was complemented by a scientific study of indigenous vines, in partnership with the universities of Florence and Pisa. In 1982, Campogiovanni estate was bought: 20 hectares of vineyards in Montalcino, one of the best and well-known places in the world regarding viticulture and winemaking.
The San Felice property includes 150 Ha / 346 Acres in the Chianti Classico; 20 Ha / 50 Acres in Montalcino and 50 Ha / 123 Acres in Maremma. The current winemaking capacity is over a million bottles with the aim to create the best Tuscan expression in these different areas.
Now more than ever, sustainability is the key to integrate winemaking passion with the beautiful landscape of our territories. Efforts are made to safeguard the most significant buildings of the San Felice hamlet but also to maintain the ancient dry-stone walls: we combat erosion by maintaining the terracing and constantly analyzing variations in flora and microfauna. All the vineyards are managed according to methods of precision viticulture, which allow ad hoc treatments for each plant, to minimize environmental impact and maximize product quality. We also pay attention to the biodiversity of our vines: in fact, during the 1970s we formed an experimental vineyard, called Vitiarium, in which hundreds of species have been cultivated and studied for all over this years, with great results, our Pugnitello above all.
History was also made by one of the first Supertuscan ever made, the Vigorello. In 1968, we created one of the starting point of the revolution of quality that would bring the great wines of Tuscany to the international marketplace forefront through the following decades.
