The estate dates back to the XIVth century and has gone by the name Château Suduiraut since 1580. A feudal castle used to stand here in Medieval times, but it was destroyed during the Religious Wars and once again during the Fronde Rebellion.
In 1670, Blaise de Suduiraut rebuilt the castle in the sober and calssical style of the XVIIth century. At the same time, the vineyard which had been devastated in the past, was reconstructed. And, some time later, the magnificent gardens designed by Le Nôtre were added to complete the property.
In 1855, the exceptional quality of the estate's terroir was recognised and Château Suduiraut became a First Cru Classé.
The Château remained in the Suduiraut family for over two centuries and has belonged to just four successive owners since then. Château Suduiraut is owned by AXA Millésimes since 1992.
The terroir is essential in making a great wine. But the human factor is also crucial, especially during the picking of the grapes than can last for several weeks. The grapes are exclusively hand-picked and very carefully chosen by experienced local pickers that we know well and that we employ year after year. The key word to this is a strict selection of the various plots in the vineyard, according to the age and the nature of the vines.
If Nature has been good and given us all these essential components (there has been some years where we did not make any Suduiraut at all), we will then witness a true miracle of Nature which makes a Suduiraut wine so exceptional, unlike anything else in the world...
