Chosen by the company, the name Cottanera comes from an ancient rural hamlet that lies on the edge of the family vineyards, along the banks of the Alcantara River. Cottanera is a jewel of 100 contiguous hectares, of which 65 are under vine. The vineyards and the cellar are located in Castiglione di Sicilia (CT), where all the phases of production are carried out, from harvest to bottling.
The philosophy that drives the estate is that the land is an invaluable asset. Originally planted with international varietals, native grape varieties have gradually been introduced, traditionally grown on Mount Etna, such as Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio and Carricante
You mustn't visit Cottanera without discovering how wine is made in such a unique environment. An expert guide will take you round the winery before hosting a tasting of three regional wines- Barbazzale Bianco, Barbazzale Rosso, Fatagione- and an exclusive tasting of an Etna Bianco of the select “Contrada” district- Etna Bianco Contrada Feudo di Mezzo. The experience wouldn't be complete without a skilful pairing of food with the wines. Start with mouthwatering arancini (Sicilian rice balls), home-grown olives and sun-dried tomatoes, accompanied by our very own Cottanera olive oil drizzled on bread baked in a wood-fired oven. Then tuck into a selection of cheese and salami from the local Nebrodi region, bruschetta, a salad of local seasonal vegetables and a warm starter.
