Explore the gorgeous wine region of Margaret River which is occasionally referred to as the Bordeaux of Australia thanks to the similarities in the terroir and the wine producing styles

A three-and-a-half-hour drive south of Perth, the Margaret River region produces some of the finest of Australian wine, with more than 15% of vintage wines. In full swing since the 1960s, the Margaret River has become the main wine region of Western Australia. It is also known for attempting to introduce the first appellation of origin system in the country.

Margaret River is 200 kilometers south of Perth, the state capital of Western Australia. This coastal region of the Indian Ocean, between Cape Naturaliste in the North and Cape Leeuwin in the South, has a hot and humid oceanic climate. The climate of Margaret River is similar to that of Bordeaux and allows to produce wines more European than the other Australian wine regions. Moreover, this region is very well-recognized in Australia for its production of European-style wines.

The wineries in Margaret River stretch along a coastal strip between the two Capes and its landscape is marked by low cliffs. The terroir is influenced by the Cape ridge with its clay soils covering the granite, rich in aluminum and iron. The ridge protects the vines behind it against the intensity of the maritime winds.

The main red grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, giving wines comparable to those of Bordeaux. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are often blended together to make high quality wines. Australia's finest Cabernet Sauvignons are found in the Margaret River, with black fruit and fern aromas on the palate. The region also produces Syrahs and Zinfandels with high alcohol content. Chardonnay thrives in the Margaret River, with its natural acidity and core fruit aromas. It is mineral, intense and has a wide range of flavors. Finally, the blend Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc works wonderfully in the wineries of Margaret River, resulting in wines of strong acidity, notes of gooseberry and exotic fruits.
