Almenkerk Wine Estate
In the beautiful Elgin Valley, you will meet Joris Van Almenkerk, winemaker and owner of the spectacular Almenkerk Wine Estate. The Almenkerk Wine Cellar was constructed against the mountainside with wonderful views over the Elgin Valley and the Kogelberg Mountains. The winery consists of the Fermentation Cellar where the wine is made, the Maturation Cellar where the barrels are maturing our wines, two storage buildings and the tasting centre and offices where the wines are served. You will enjoy a wine tasting, a cellar tour and an informative blending exercise to gain insight into the most important job of a winemaker.
You’ll then continue to the 1786 ha Oak Valley Estate which produces wines, fruits, flowers and gourmet meats. Their wines are produced within the highly-acclaimed cool climate Elgin Region, statistically the coolest wine region in South Africa. The benefit of a cooler climate is that the grapes spend a longer time attached to the vine. This enhances flavour development as the grapes reach physiological ripeness more gradually with lower sugar levels and consequently lower alcohols. You’ll be given an overview of the activities on the farm, culminating with a delicious lunch at the Pool Room Restaurant accompanied by some of the farm’s excellent wines.
