The quality of African wines has been increasing manifold in the international markets and the country is now a hot-spot for new age wine tourism
While most of the country’s vineyards are scattered across the West Cape regions – including Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Constantia around Cape Town – on a wine holiday in South Africa, wine enthusiasts can explore as far afield as the Northern Cape, the Orange Free State, and even the KwaZulu-Natal midlands to sample world-class varietals including Pinotage, Chenin Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc.
There are currently 17 ‘official’ South African wine routes constituted by geographical wine-growing location, as well as several special interest wine routes such as the Cape 62 wine route, believed to be the longest in the world, and the Green Mountain Eco route – the world’s first biodiverse wine route. A wine holiday in Cape Town or Stellenbosch is an ideal way to start exploring the Eco route.
The wine regions of the country are officially divided into four geographical categories:
First, there is the geographic unit that corresponds to the administrative province of location of the vineyard. Most of these vineyards are in the Western Cape Province.
The second category is the wine region, a vast area with a characteristic geographical feature. These areas are the Coastal Region with its renowned wineries, Olifants River, Klein Karoo and Breede River Valley.
Then, the district is a smaller space that has an environment that influences the wines. The most famous districts are Stellenbosch, Paarl Valley and Swartland.
Wards or boroughs, like Walker Bay and Constantia, are smaller places producing very distinctive wines. Wine Holidays in Constantia can help you taste Napoleon Bonaparte's favourite wine!
Today the foreign investors have returned to this country and the number of private wineries has increased. The country is today the 9th producer of wine in the world.
