This is where the first vineyards were planted in South Africa by early Dutch settlers in 1685. Over time, the region’s wines have been noted by historical figures including writers Charles Dickens and Jane Austin – while former French leader Napoleon Bonaparte was allegedly so enamoured by the region’s eponymous sweet wines that he refused anything else from his deathbed.

The region is home to eight award-winning Constantia wine estates: Groot Constantia, Steenberg Vineyards, Constantia Ustig, Klein Constantia, Buitenverwachting, Eagles Nest, Constantia Glen and the Silvermist Vineyards – all of which are within 15km from the energetic city of Cape Town. The wine estates in Constantia are complemented by the region’s world class wines, unparalleled natural beauty and a selection of unique outdoor activities that draw flocks of visitors to the Cape Winelands every year.
