Saint-Emilion is a place where history is ubiquitous. It’s breathtakingly beautiful landscape of best vineyards and countryside has been listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO since 1999. Saint-Emilion is one of the most prestigious wine areas in the world known for Merlot-driven red wines.
Saint-Emilion is a key sub-region of Bordeaux, located on the right bank of the Dordogne River. With diverse terroirs, a large number of wine producers, some of the world’s best wineries and its proximity to Bordeaux, it has become one of the top destinations in the Southwest of France. The monolithic church is one of the town’s main tourist attractions. The church is topped by a belfry which soars high and has a prominent view. There are also underground galleries that were enlarged to be used as catacombs. the Trinity Chapel, the Monastery, Emilion’s Hermitage, the Tour du Roy, and the Cadene Arch which dates back to the 13C are architectural marvel and are deep rooted in History. The steep winding roads are locally known as Tertres, The Tertre of the Tente links the square of the monolithic church to the square of the bell tower, with an outstanding view over the village and the countryside.
On your way out of the town, look out for La Grande Muraille – the unrestored, magnificent wall and last vestige of an immense XIII contrary Dominican monastery, destroyed in the 100 Years of War. The wall gives its name to the neighboring Château.
